Transgender Hair Transplants
Your hairline is a highly visible gender signifier. The differences between traditionally coded masculine and feminine hairlines include the shape and position of the hairline, as well as the direction and flow of the hair. The masculine hairline typically begins a bit higher on the forehead and may recede over time. It is straighter and squarer than the rounder, softer feminine hairline.
Additionally, the hormones typically taken by FTM transitioning can lead to hair loss for those with a genetic predisposition to DHT. Those undergoing MTF transitioning aren’t immune to hair loss either (though it’s less common). So, both forms of hormone therapy can contribute to hair loss in transgender individuals.
Hairline and Gender Identity
Reef Hair offers options for transitioning and non-binary clients who are considering a transplant procedure. Hair transplant surgery can reshape the hairline; thicken existing scalp, facial, or body hair; and replace lost hair. The most common gender-affirming procedures are hairline feminization, facial masculinization, and hair restoration procedures for clients experiencing hormone-related hair loss. We also specialize in aligning facial hair and eyebrows with our clients’ preferred appearance.
At Reef Hair, we are skilled at non-binary, MTF, and FTM gender-affirming hair transplant procedures. Our team is happy to help guide you on your journey to a hairline that fits your gender identity. Surgical expertise and hairline design artistry make us uniquely qualified to help you reach your goals with natural-looking results.
Male-to-Female Hair Transplantation
Gender affirming hair restoration for male-to-female clients involves creating a softer, rounder hairline that begins further forward on the skull than a more masculine one.
Hair transplantation may also be performed to revise a hairline that has receded due to pre-transition male pattern baldness. Female hormone therapy usually slows or stops the progression of this type of hair loss but cannot reverse it.
A hair transplant is the only permanent way to lower the hairline and restore density. We recommend beginning the process while you have ample donor hair. Reef Hair is your hair restoration expert, providing a variety of transplantation procedures to replace lost hair and give you permanent, natural-looking results.
Female-to-Male Hair Transplantation
When male hormone therapy doesn’t result in the desired amount (and pattern) of facial or body hair, Reef Hair can help. Beard transplants are a safe, common method of facial masculinization. Transplantation assists in creating a thicker, fuller beard… as well as in adding or enhancing chest and body hair.
Hormone therapy may have the unintended outcome of activating a type of hair loss called male pattern baldness. Also known as Androgenic alopecia, male pattern baldness is characterized by a distinctive M-shaped pattern that appears above the forehead and gradually recedes toward the back of the scalp. It is caused by DHT (a testosterone byproduct) which attaches to hair follicles and causes them to shrink and become less productive.
Although some treatments may slow its progress, male pattern baldness can only be reversed through transplantation from a healthy donor area on your scalp. The earlier you begin intervention, the better your outcome will be. We are your experts in hair restoration for transgender individuals, providing a variety of transplantation procedures to replace lost hair and give you permanent, natural-looking results.
