Hair Restoration For Men
By age 30, nearly a quarter of men begin to display some signs of thinning hair, and by age 50, that number doubles. Over the course of their lifetime, more than 80 percent of men will experience some form of hair loss.
Overwhelmingly, this is due to a condition called androgenic alopecia – caused by a combination of genetics, hormones, and aging. While this form of baldness isn’t considered a medical disorder… it can impact one’s confidence, self-esteem, and psychological well-being.
What Is Male Pattern Baldness?
Androgenic (or androgenetic) alopecia – also known as male pattern baldness – is by far the most common form of hair loss. More than 80 percent of all hair transplants are done to replace hair lost to androgenic alopecia.
Androgenic alopecia is caused by genetic factors inherited from one’s parents. This genetic disposition is linked to a heightened sensitivity to DHT (a testosterone byproduct that causes follicle miniaturization). When hair follicles become constricted, they produce thin hairs with fragile shafts that are prone to falling out easily. This type of hair loss progresses as hormone levels change due to aging.
While it’s possible to slow the progress of androgenic alopecia with medications or non-invasive treatments, the condition is irreversible. Once the hair is lost, it rarely grows back. The good news is that this can be addressed with surgical hair transplantation. Today, these procedures are safe, natural looking, and often require little downtime.
What Does Male Pattern Baldness Look Like?
Male pattern hair loss typically begins with a receding hairline. Hair loss begins at the temples and front of the scalp and slowly recedes in a distinctive “M” shape.
It may be accompanied by a growing circle of hair loss at the vertex (back of the head), leaving only a horseshoe-shaped broken ring of hair around the sides of the head. Over time, individual hairs become finer and shorter, and hair loss may progress until total baldness occurs.
Other Types of Hair Loss
While most of our clients are those with androgenic alopecia, we treat many types of hair loss. At your initial consultation, we will perform a thorough examination to determine the cause of your hair loss and work with you to achieve the hairline you want.
Hair Restoration Solutions for Men
Reef Hair offers our clients a full range of hair transplantation options. We specialize in device assisted ARTAS® or NeoGraft® procedures, as well as performing traditional FUE and FUT transplants.
- ARTAS® is a minimally invasive, state-of-the-art robotic transplant system that uses advanced Artificial Intelligence technology to analyze, harvest, and place hair grafts. The ARTAS® process begins with a 3D analysis to design your new, customized hairline. Then, its AI algorithm will identify and select the follicles best suited for transplantation. These follicles are robotically harvested from the donor area and placed with precision in the optimal implantation site.
- NeoGraft® is a semi-automated form of hair transplantation that uses a wand-like device to harvest and place donor hairs. The NeoGraft® wand makes tiny incisions and implants the follicle simultaneously, which reduces the amount of time needed for a transplantation procedure.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the process of removing individual follicles from one location on the scalp or body and transplanting them into another area. Instead of relying on computerized technology, your surgeon uses their skill and judgment to select donor hairs and place them in their new location.
- Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) is when a surgeon harvests a small strip of skin and follicles from the donor area. Groups of follicles are then transferred to a recipient area to fill in bald spots. Manual FUT can be an excellent option for those experiencing androgenic alopecia and who have larger areas of baldness to cover.
