Whether attempting to combat hair loss or simply trying to maintain a healthy head of hair, nutrition is a good place to start. A deficiency or overabundance of vitamins or minerals can have an impact on your hair and its growth cycle… making supplements a consistent element of many effective treatment plans.

What Is the Best Supplement for Hair Health?

There are a few supplements that have a documented impact on the health of your hair.

  • Vitamin B7, more commonly known as Biotin, is frequently taken to promote and support hair growth.
  • Vitamin B complex supplements contain all eight B vitamins, including pantothenic acid, which is good for the scalp.
  • Vitamin C is used by the body in its production of collagen, as well as in its absorption of iron, both of which are important to hair growth.
  • Collagen supplements can prove quite effective. The most abundant protein in your body, collagen is the main building block for skin, muscles, bones, and other connective tissues as well as for your hair and nails.
  • Zinc is a trace mineral that is important for maintaining hair and scalp health.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in supplements that contain fish oil. Considered to be a critical component of health at the cellular level, it is believed to be especially conducive to scalp and hair health.

What Vitamin Am I Deficient in If My Hair Is Falling Out?

A number of vitamin deficiencies can affect hair health, and it is not necessarily as simple as taking more. For example, an overabundance of some vitamins and minerals – such as vitamin A and the mineral selenium – can cause hair loss while deficiencies in iron and protein can contribute to hair thinning.

Is Zinc Good for Your Hair?

Zinc is a trace mineral that supports general healthy cell function. Deficiencies in zinc are rare, but it has been demonstrated to be associated with alopecia. However, the research so far on whether fixing the deficiency can have an impact on hair loss is mixed.

Can Too Much Zinc Cause Hair Loss?

When it comes to zinc, trace amounts are best. Just as too little can contribute to hair thinning, an excess of zinc can impede absorption and utilization of other minerals essential to overall health – including copper and iron. Copper deficiencies can lead to hair strands becoming brittle and easily broken, leading to hair loss.

You are what you eat.” There’s more than a grain of truth to this adage.

What we put in our bodies has a significant effect on every aspect of our health, including the health of our hair. This also means that when we are dieting, we may be starving our bodies of necessary nutrients and our hair of crucial vitamins and minerals needed for it to grow.

Can Diet Cause Hair Thinning?

If your diet lacks the proper amount and balance of nutrients, your hair will suffer. When your body doesn’t receive adequate nutrition, it deprioritizes nonessential functions like hair growth… allocating energy to more important processes that are necessary for survival.

This often leads to telogen effluvium – which appears as excess shedding throughout the scalp and overall hair thinning. Telogen effluvium occurs when the hair’s growth cycle is disrupted by metabolic stress, pushing greater-than-usual numbers of hair strands into their telogen (resting) phase. In telogen effluvium, new hair either doesn’t grow at all or grows back very slowly while existing hair sheds more than usual.

What Vitamin Deficiency Causes Hair Loss?

When dieting, we may not receive adequate amounts of specific vitamins and minerals. Vitamin deficiencies implicated in hair loss are vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B9 (folate), vitamin B12, and vitamin H (biotin).

Other nutrients required for healthy hair growth include protein, calcium, and zinc, and iron. Iron deficiency is a common problem for those who follow a plant-based diet, so supplements may be required to maintain healthy iron levels.

What Foods Cause Your Hair to Fall Out?

Nutritional deficits are only one aspect of the relationship between diet and hair loss. There are many popular types of food that can damage our scalp and hair. These include foods high in processed sugar or otherwise high on the glycemic index, foods high in saturated fats, and foods that contain high levels of mercury.

Foods containing processed sugar or those high on the glycemic index (like potatoes, white rice, or white bread) cause inflammation, increase oil production, and can decrease blood flow to the scalp. These factors inhibit healthy hair growth.

Fatty or fried foods also increase oil production and create free radicals that damage hair’s growth cells. As for the mercury often found in certain fish species… it collects in the hair and can lead to thin, brittle, easily shed or broken strands.

Can Diet Related Hair Loss Be Reversed?

If you commit to improving your diet, there’s a very good chance your hair loss will be temporary. Results won’t happen overnight, and it may take around six months for your hair’s growth cycle to produce visible regrowth. During this time, we can recommend treatments to protect your existing hair and to create optimal conditions for hair regrowth.

Water accounts for approximately 60 percent of the human body. It is vital to the health of every cell — regulating body temperature, metabolizing food, lubricating the joints, cushioning the brain and spine, and flushing waste from the body. Water is so essential, yet nearly a quarter of us don’t consume enough water to maintain optimal bodily functions.

Is Proper Hydration Good For Your Hair?

Water is even important for the growth of your hair. Drinking sufficient amounts of water:

  1. Nourishes hair follicles. Water allows the flow of minerals and other nutrients to reach your scalp, providing it with the nutrition it needs to grow healthy hair.
  2. Allows proper absorption. Healthy hair has a high water content. When it is deprived of the water it needs, hair becomes dull and lifeless. When it receives proper hydration, hair looks fuller and more vibrant.
  3. Flushes toxins. Toxins accumulate in the hair, causing it to become brittle and easily broken. Adequate water consumption removes these toxins and allows them to be excreted.
  4. Improves overall health. If one is in good overall health, it’s more likely hair will be fuller, stronger, and healthier… and less prone to the excess shedding and poor growth of health-related telogen effluvium.

Can You Lose Hair from Lack of Water?

Dehydration can absolutely lead to hair loss. Hair follicles are among the fastest-growing tissues in the human body – and they require hydration to function properly. Being dehydrated can cause new hair fall or accelerate existing hair loss.

What Does Dehydration Hair Loss Look Like?

Minor dehydration can cause hair to look dull and unhealthy. More serious dehydration causes hair to become dry, thin, brittle, and easily broken. It may even lead to excess shedding and thinning hair throughout the scalp.

How Do You Know If You’re Chronically Dehydrated?

Dehydration symptoms may include excessive thirst; dry mouth, lips, tongue, or eyes; sunken eyes; infrequent urination, often with dark-colored urine; fatigue; dizziness, and confusion. While excessive thirst is one of the signs of dehydration, be aware that you can be dehydrated and not feel thirsty.

If you suspect you may be dehydrated but are unsure, try the skin turgor test. Pinch the skin on the back of your hand and release it. If it remains loose or raised – and doesn’t return to normal – there is a good chance you are experiencing significant dehydration. If you experience frequent or constant dehydration, we strongly suggest visiting your physician to find and address the underlying cause.

Can Hair Loss from Dehydration Be Reversed?

Unless your hair loss has an additional cause, dehydration-related hair loss typically is reversible. If the cause of your dehydration is resolved, you should see renewed hair growth within several months.

The easiest way to stay properly hydrated is to drink more water, and to avoid liquids that contain caffeine or sugar. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, as these contain water and electrolytes. If this doesn’t help, you may need to drink water with added minerals and electrolytes. In certain cases, IV hydration may be helpful or even necessary.
